Two dark glass men's eau de parfum bottles with a navy box on a midnight blue background
Short Answer

The longest-lasting men’s fragrances combine a high concentration with a heavy base. Look for an eau de parfum, parfum or perfume oil built on woods such as cedar, sandalwood and vetiver, or on leather, amber, oud, tobacco, vanilla and musk. Bright citrus and light aquatic scents fade faster, even as an eau de parfum, unless they have a solid woody or musky base. Always test on your own skin across a full day before buying.

Most “best of” lists name the same famous bottles, but how long any scent lasts depends on its formula and on you. Knowing what to look for lets you judge any fragrance, whatever the price. If the labels are new to you, start with our guide to eau de parfum vs eau de toilette.

What Makes a Men’s Fragrance Last

Factor Lasts longer Fades sooner
Concentration Parfum, eau de parfum, perfume oil Eau de toilette, cologne, aftershave splash
Base notes Woods, leather, amber, oud, tobacco, vanilla, musk Citrus, light herbs, airy aquatic notes
Format Alcohol-free oils and attars Alcohol-heavy splashes
Application Moisturised skin, chest and neck, a light mist on clothing Dry skin, wrists that are washed often

Ingredients can matter as much as strength. Perfumer Nick Gilbert told Marie Claire UK that oud, for example, is both incredibly powerful and long lasting, and that oils tend to last longer than alcohol-based sprays, although they wear closer to the skin.

Scent Families That Last Longest

Woody

Cedar, sandalwood and vetiver give a smooth, dry warmth that lingers well into the evening.

Leather and Tobacco

Rich, smoky and slightly sweet. Usually strong, so one or two sprays is plenty.

Amber and Oud

Resins, spices and dark woods. Among the most tenacious styles, best kept for cooler days and evenings.

Aromatic Fougère

The classic barbershop style of lavender over a mossy, woody base. Fresh at first, with a base that holds on.

Want something fresh that still lasts? Look for a citrus or aquatic opening with musks, woods or ambery notes listed in the base. That base is what will still be there after lunch.

Aftershave, EDT or EDP?

Aftershave is a light, refreshing splash designed for after shaving, so it is not meant to last all day. An eau de toilette is a good middle ground for the office or gym. For the longest wear, choose an eau de parfum or a perfume oil, and apply it straight after a shower. Our guide on how to make perfume last longer covers the application tricks that add hours.

How to Test Longevity Before You Buy

  1. Spray once on your forearm or the back of your hand, not just on a paper strip.
  2. Note the time and carry on with your day.
  3. Check in the afternoon and again in the evening. Smell the spot after time away from it, as your nose adapts quickly.
  4. Ask someone else whether they can still smell it.
  5. Try it on a second day, as weather and activity change the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does EDP last longer than EDT for men?

Generally, yes. An eau de parfum contains more perfume oil than an eau de toilette, so the same scent usually lasts longer as an EDP.

Do perfume oils last longer than sprays?

Often they do, because there is no alcohol to speed up evaporation. They tend to sit closer to the skin, so they project less.

Where should men apply fragrance for it to last?

On the chest and neck after a shower, where the skin is warm and partly covered by clothing. A light mist on a jacket lining or scarf can add even longer wear.
