"Milk in first" has historically been associated with working-class households, for two very practical reasons: pouring cold milk in first protected cheaper, thinner earthenware from cracking under thermal shock, and it made it easier to judge the right amount of milk before the tea's colour made the cup harder to read. Pouring tea first, by contrast, became associated with finer porcelain and a certain performative confidence — showing off the tea's colour and quality before "diluting" it. The chemistry, as it turns out, ended up agreeing with the practical working-class habit all along.
